Dismounted Infantry Virtual Environment 2
Dismounted Infantry Virtual Environment 2 was an update to Dismounted Infantry Virtual Environment to the Source engine. While not particularly old, Dismounted Infantry Virtual Environment was updated "to take advantage of the latest visual and functional qualities of the 'Half Life 2' engine" (Stone, Serious Gaming) and also to take advantage of the larger map areas that the Source engine enabled (p8, Commercial-off-the-shelf-technology in UK military training, 2016). It was also hoped that it would incorporate land and air vehicle training as well (p4, Antolik, DIVE Trials 2004), features which would have been much easier to implement in the Source engine than the GoldSource engine. It was announced by the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence on 7th November 2005 (http://www.news.mod.uk/news_headline_story2.asp?newsItem_id=3721). It is assumed that Maverick Developments were still involved as the Ministry of Defence made mention of a "small private software company" (http://www.news.mod.uk/news_headline_story2.asp?newsItem_id=3721).
Dismounted Infantry Virtual Environment 2 functioned similarly to Dismounted Infantry Virtual Environment in that it allowed soldiers to train virtually. Two of the available screenshots - from the Ministry of Defence and Professor Robert Stone's 2005 paper Serious Gaming - Virtual Reality's Saviour? - both show unmodified Half-Life 2 view models and it reportedly used Metrocops as enemies as well (p9, Commercial-off-the-shelf-technology in UK military training, 2016). No doubt it was a proof of concept of a significant improvement over the original Dismounted Infantry Virtual Environment but it is not clear why further customisation wasn't undertaken. In any case, the lack of further customisation meant it was not life-like enough, and development did not continue further (p9, Commercial-off-the-shelf-technology in UK military training, 2016), even though the concept itself was considered successful. Nevertheless, it continued to feature on QinetiQ's website until at least 2011 (https://www.qinetiq.com/home/defence/defence_solutions/command_and_control/cyber_testing/dismounted_infantry_virtual_enviroment_dive.html).
