Dismounted Infantry Virtual Environment

Dismounted Infantry Virtual Environment was developed by Maverick Developments in conjunction with QinetiQ as military training software for the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence in 2002 and 2003. While Maverick Developments did not publicise their product explicitly (presumably for government secrecy reasons) - according to their website "They also work with the UK Ministry of Defence, developing troop training products using games technology" (http://www.maverickdev.com/) - the resulting software was the subject of academic papers investigating the effectiveness of software in military training which revealed both its name and screenshots.

According to Maverick Developments' Tony Newton, the United Kingdom's Defence Evaluation and Research Agency had approached Valve (presumably in 2001 as the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency became QinetiQ in 2001) who referred them on to Maverick Developments. Maverick Developments developed Dismounted Infantry Virtual Environment on a modified GoldSource engine, though it is not clear what modifications were made. Dismounted Infantry Virtual Environment was trialled in January 2003 and the second half of 2004 (p3, Antolik, DIVE Trials 2004) and was successful enough to warrant the creation of Dismounted Infantry Virtual Environment 2.
