Source Filmmaker
Source Filmmaker was developed by Valve Software as an internal tool for the creation of trailers and media for Source engine games. It reportedly dates back as far as 2005 for the creation of Day of Defeat: Source's trailers (https://www.sourcemodding.com/history/sfm/), but its existence was first discovered in 2007 during the beta of Team Fortress 2: the first public build of the game included a number of internal tools in the bin/tools/
directory: actbusy.dll
, commedit.dll
, foundry.dll
, ifm.dll
, pet.dll
, sampletool.dll
, vcdblock.dll
and vmt.dll
. The engine's ability to load these tools was blocked soon after, and it wasn't until June 2th, 2012 that a beta of Source Filmmaker was properly released to the public.
The re-release of Source Filmmaker in 2012 was much more advanced than the 2007 version with more interfaces and additional engine features.
The Source Filmmaker website was launched in 2015: https://www.sourcefilmmaker.com/ though it was only used to publicise the Saxxy Awards for Team Fortress 2.
